EBSMEDA: Role and Objectives

EBSMEDA was created by the Ebonyi State Government to foster the growth and sustainability of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) within the state. Its primary goal is to stimulate economic development, create job opportunities, and enhance the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Ebonyi.

The Origins of EBSMEDA

Recognizing the untapped potential within Ebonyi men and women, the Ebonyi State government under the incumbent governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru saw the need to establish an Agency to be known as Ebonyi State Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (EBSMEDA).

This includes smallholder farmers, agro-processors, input suppliers, aggregators, and distributors engaged in farming, food production, storage, packaging, and marketing.

At the Ebonyi State Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (EBSMEDA), we stand as more than a conventional institution. Our agency fuels the spirit of entrepreneurship in Ebonyi State, diligently fostering, fortifying, and cultivating a dynamic ecosystem for Small and Medium Scale enterprises (SMES). EBSMEDA's role is expansive. We collaborate with local and international financial partners to ensure our SMEs secure access to affordable capital, growth-enhancing credit, and the necessary tools to broaden their ventures. “Between December 2023 and January 2024, we received grants of ₦100,000 up to ₦500,000,” recalls Mrs. Chinyere Uche, a food vendor in Abakaliki. “That support helped me scale from a roadside stand to a brick-and-mortar shop—now I employ three young women.”

EBSMEDA is set to host the SABER Technical Session and Statewide Townhall Meeting — a strategic engagement designed to strengthen the business environment for MSMEs across Ebonyi State. The event will bring together key stakeholders from government, the private sector, and the entrepreneurial ecosystem to assess and align state policies with the SABER (Small Business Enabling Report) framework. The townhall will also serve as a platform for MSMEs to share their experiences, voice their concerns, and contribute to shaping impactful, inclusive enterprise reforms.
